Components of Knowledge Management System

Knowledge is needed and used in all organizations. Knowledge management systems (KMS) help organizations to create, share and use knowledge. According to (Schwartz 2006), KMS is a system designed to provide users in organizations with the knowledge required to make decisions and perform tasks. In addition, the systems should be designed to establish clear and achievable goals benefiting the entire organization. To achieve this, KMS is made of various components. This paper focuses on the components of KMS.

Knowledge management system is comprised of various components. First is the strategy which defines the needs of an organization and the framework to address them. Next are actors; people who form the KMS system and play part to effect it. Infrastructure is another key KMS component enabling functioning of the system. This includes facilities, equipment, instruments, software/hardware and networks. The other components are functionality, delivery, content and continuous improvement.

Relative to functionality, KMS is designed to support as well as enhance knowledge related processes, projects or tasks in organizations. In regards to delivery, this KMS component deals with delivery of knowledge such as the mode, style and techniques. Furthermore, KMS content provides the structure that ensures the system functions well. Lastly, KMS is comprised of a platform that enable review of the system regularly to ensure it meets the objectives as stipulated in the strategy.

To sum up, KMS are essential in organizations to provide knowledge needed in performing of tasks and projects. The various component aforementioned enable KMS to function effectively.
