Introduction
This paper is designed to provide a high-level description of an information system of college admission process. It includes the following:
1) First a general description of the information system is provided which includes the title, overall function, and the users of an information system and what they are required to do with the information system.
2) An external view of the information system which comprises of the inputs, outputs, boundary, and information processing and storage that the system performs, and
3) An internal view of the information system including the particular information processors, information stores, and any networks within the information system.
1. General Description of the Information System
Consider a college who handles application of students who are submitting their applications through an online portal using the Internet. The college is required to evaluate the applications of students and then decide which students are eligible for the entrance test or not. Hence the evaluation process can be regarded as partially automated because once the applications submitted online by the student is checked by the system, it is then forwarded to the admission officer/admission supervisor for further evaluation of the applications. The selected candidates are then called for entrance test which is then evaluated by an experienced teacher, who is required to check the attained percentages and decide accordingly which students are eligible for final selection. Once this step is also performed the admission officer is required to finalize the selection letter of students which have been approved. After the completion of this step the admission supervisor is required to print the approved applications, admission officer will sign them and finally original will be filed in a cabinet and one copy will be mailed to student. At the end of this process the admission officer will also be required to update system with the status of applicants as approved or denied / pass or fail and publish them over the Internet on their college portal.
