CLIMATE CHANGE

Introduction

There have been remarkable changes in the climatic systems of various regions of the earth since the industrial revolution. Climate change refers to the variations in the climatic conditions of a given area, mostly determined by the changes in the temperature and rainfall patterns (Downie et al., 2009). Climate change is the greatest environmental problem that is currently facing the world and it require global participation in managing the crisis.

Australia’s Climate

Australia experiences different climatic conditions because of its size. The continent is divided into six distinct climatic zones with different ranges of rainfall and temperature including the tropical zone, temperate zone, sub-tropical, grassland, desert and semi-desert. However, all these climatic zones have been affected by climatic changes.

Causes of Climate Change

Climate change can occur as a result of the natural processes such as volcanism that release large volumes of GHG such as CO2 and SO4 into the atmosphere. Anthropogenic activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, agriculture and deforestation, have been cited as the major contributors to climate change mainly releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These gases hold heat in the atmosphere resulting in increased warming of the globe.

Climate Change and Australian Ecosystems

Climatic change in Australia has had adverse effects on its natural ecosystems. The coral reefs, for example, have been destroyed due to the increase in heatwaves from the increased temperatures leading to species loss. Also, the changes in water chemistry due to increased CO2 levels has also led to increased algal growth, further causing dissolution of the corals and death of the species therein.

Rangeland productivity has also decreased in vast areas due to climatic changes. This is because of an increased rate of disturbance altering both plant and animal composition in these areas.

As a result of climate change, there has been a reduction in the amount of snow cover in the alpine regions. The result is a reduction in the numbers of snow-dependent organisms such as the mountain pygmy-possum following the reduction in subniven habitats

Tropical forests, also known to host large numbers of organisms are also under severe threat from climatic change. This is because of the prolonged dry seasons and increased rainfall patterns that result in habitat destruction.

Climate change and bushfires

The increased incidences of bushfires in Australia is also as a result of changes in the climatic patterns within the region. South Eastern Australia, for instance, has been cited globally as a fire prone area (Cleugh and CISRO Publishing, 2006). An example of a bushfire caused by extreme temperatures in the continent is the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires that claimed 173 lives.

Agriculture

The agricultural sector has also been affected by climate change resulting in a reduction in the agricultural yields. Increased temperatures also affect pasture production resulting in proper diets in the dairy cows hence low milk production (Fuhrer et al., 2014).

Conclusion

From the above discussion, it is evident that climate change has adverse effects on ecosystem well- being and the human life. It is, therefore, important for the Australian government to develop policies to combat these changes by increasing the people’s resilience to the effects of climate change. More importantly, all individuals should be involved in positive environmental practises to reduce the consequences of climate change.
