Classical theories of management: Max Weber

Max Weber made great contribution to classical organizational theory by emphasizing that organizations should be less ambiguous and diverse through clear lines of control and authority. Weber reiterated on the need for specialization, standardized principles, merit system and division of labor based on hierarchical power structures (Griffin, 2014). This meant that behavior of employees could be better understood by assessing cause and effect in a network of human interactions. In a hierarchical structure, Dyck and Neubert (2008) argue that officials require expert training, written rules and career advancement as judged by organizations and not individuals. Moreover, the theorist believed that society should integrate rational ideas into culture for it to be transformed into a bureaucratic entity.

When employees are judged by rules-based and impersonal activities that mirror on performance and merit, they move away from immeasurable activities (Griffin, 2014). One way to encourage an effective workplace is by setting clear guidelines and authority. Although Weber foresaw bureaucracy inhibiting happiness of individuals as they are forced to confirm to rigid norms and rules with little likelihood of change, behavior management movement confirmed otherwise (Merz, 2013). For example, a sales manager at Rolls Royce exercises bureaucratic rules and regulations through control and direction of actions of organizations. The United States military is another organization that uses hierarchical structures with many rules and regulations. Given the unnecessary delay in decision-making due to rules and regulations, it provides little initiative and growth of employees. Besides, employees think less of the organizations hence suitable for government organization and not business oriented firms.
