Introduction

Families having children with developmental delay problems encounter a lot of stress totally unique to their situation. In addition, when parents are faced with other issues including financial, emotional, and social problems arising from the situation, they are presented with difficulties of having a good relationship with the children and finally finding hardships in providing good care for such children (Chaplin,2010). Such problems are argued to be able to affect the overall well being of the entire family. According to research therefore, family adaptations are highly needed in order to ensure a developmental environment is provided for the child as well as the general health of the entire family. This particular paper intends to identify developmental issues from a case study and thereafter provide an account on the importance of developmental knowledge and its application to real life issues.

There are many causes of developmental delays in children, which can either be environmental or physical.As highlighted by Chaplin & Gilvarry (2011),the common factors attributed to developmental disabilities include growth and nutrition problems, abnormalities in genes and chromosomes and premature births. The developmental issues that clearly feature in the case study are associated with the behavioural development and mental development of the children. These are some of the most common developmental problems among children. The children are indicated as going through problems associated with psychological and emotional torture. With Pete being violent, the history of domestic violence in the family is likely to have significantly impacted on the children’s development. Tom who is the elder son in the family has thus shown some kind of conduct disorder indicated by his violent outburst where he attacks other children without a reason and verbally abuses the staff. His development behaviour (anger and violence) seems to emanate from his father who Tom seems to imitate. His behaviour might also be an adaptation to survive within the harsh environment in the family.

According to Chaplin & Gilvarry (2011), such culturally abnormal behaviors tremendously impact on children’s education and are the reason why Tom is experiencing difficulties in his education and relations with other school children. Many children are seen to avoid him because of his behaviors hence he is seen as having a lot of difficulties in having joint activities with others as he is constantly avoided. It is good that one of the staffs has managed to capture his character and can handle his outburst. This particular type of behavior depicted by Tom and many other culturally abnormal behaviors is caused by many factors which might include biological, social and the need for an element of control. Brett, who is the younger brother, also has a problem with his social life as he has limited speech and poor coordination this might have been caused by the violent environment that he has been brought up(Hemmings & Underwood, 2008).

Similarly, the issue of mental health forms another significant developmental depicted within the case study as Brett is likely to be suffering from psychiatric illness attributed to a lot of traumatic events from the family (Chaplin,2010). The traumatizing events that Brett is experiencing include the attacks from his brother, the family violence history, as well as the injuries he always gets from his common accidents(Roane, 2007). The bruises that are seen in the body of Brett and his character in school are a sign of mental problems that he is suffering from. Other contributing factors to his problems of Brett are poverty and the limited employment opportunities that the parents of Brett are undergoing(Hemmings & Underwood, 2008).

In the case study, neglect is highlighted as one of the main problems that both of the children (Tom and Brett) are undergoing within this particular family, where their father Pete (a long haul driver) lives with them intermittently hence show that he really doesn’t care about his family(Neef, 2010). Similarly, the history of alcohol, drug abuse and domestic violence within the family seems to facilitate neglect and abuse which must have worsened the developmental conditions of the children as highlighted in the case study where, during the conversation, Pete seems not to be keen and doesn’t care as he just stares and doesn’t answer the questions appropriately, but only gives short comments or single-word answers. Jo, who is the mother, is however a little bit responsible as she attends to education issues pertaining to the children. However, she doesn’t have any support from either the local areas/community or her husband, Pete. The fact that Jo is noticed by the worker as drunk shows the kind of stress that she is trying to avoid in nurturing the children for proper development(Chaplin, 2010).

According to Roane (2007), lack of education and low self esteem among the caregivers are the main causes of incidences of neglect, abuse and consequently developmental problems among the children. Social norms, miscommunication and inappropriate behaviors among caregivers are also other causes.According to Martorell (2008), understanding developmental disabilities among individuals is one of the most important steps in handling such particular families as Pete’s. Throughout history, many individuals who are suffering from developmental disabilities have always been seen as incompetent and incapable of making informed decisions (Martorell,2008).However, with knowledge on developmental disabilities, one can now employ concepts such as social role valorization and increased self-determination. Developmental studies also provide great models such as person-centered planning which is of great importance in dealing with problems relating to developmental disabilities. People who are suffering from developmental disabilities need close attention from those helping them out in order to give the best in terms of caring. In this case, an individual needs to deeply understand the main causes of the problems the victims are going through(Hemmings & Underwood, 2008).

Children’s development is usually unique to individual children hence are very hard to understand and predict. One requires great knowledge to be able to tackle their problems (Martorell,2008). Close monitoring of children, such as Tom and Brett, by experts who are knowledgeable on the issues regarding developmental problems are capable of providing advice and solutions on what to expect from the child during the various developmental periods hence necessary precautions can be taken. An individual as well needs knowledge on child development in order to be able to provide assistance to families for them to adapt to such problems and live better lives (Chaplin, 2010). Family adaptations involve the strategies that help the family in adapting to the problem. Experts should ensure that the families create good opportunities that help the children achieve optimal development(Chaplin & Gilvarry, 2011).

Parental support groups, who have good knowledge on developmental issues can also offer ample opportunities to the affected individuals in reducing the sense of isolation they go through and help them increase their self esteem and optimism(Chaplin & Gilvarry, 2011). Experts in developmental issues ought to know how to advice the victims on various issues including the use of both private and public facilities depending on the specialty of the need of the children(Hemmings & Underwood, 2008). The parents of the affected children also need a lot of advice on parenting. For instance, Pete, who is the father of Tom and Brett in the case study, needs to be advised on how to raise children; not neglecting them but attending to their needs wherever they need him.Similarly, the mother who is already abusing drugs due to stress, requires counseling from professionals as regards the effects of drug abuse and also the importance of facing challenges instead of avoiding them through alcoholism. Such issues require deep knowledge on child development and therefore should be given a greater priority within societies (Martorell,2008).

Conclusion

From the above analysis of the case study, it is evident that children are vulnerable to developmental issues in the presence of uncondusive environments especially in their homes. As such, knowledge on developmental issues relating to children is very important not only to the caregivers but also to the entire society. It is actually clear that the experiences of the early childhood have a significant impact on the later adulthood life of the children. So, in order to avoid raising individuals with developmental issues, measures ought to be taken to ensure that the issues are dealt with as early as possible.
