Case Study — Arcor Group and Sustainability

Arcor Group was founded in 1951 in Argentina. Its original focus was on making sure that children can access education equitably. Gradually, it has changed its business focus to become a leading South American confectioner. Today, the company is among the largest exporter of confectionaries in the region, posting a record level of $2.6 billion in sales and $360 million on average in exports each year. In 1990, it changed focus to management professionalization. In 1992, the Group embarked on a corporate social responsibility program joining its trade partners to create the Argentine Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Less than a decade later in 2004, Arcor reviewed its working scheme through strategic planning process, which led to an adoption of a more conscious effort toward integrating CSR. In turn, Arcor created CSR Task Force to drive CSR implementation. It came up with ASR action plan in 2005 to intensify commitment to its social responsibility. In line with the action plan, Arcor started Community Relations Program in 2007 to create an awareness and training efforts toward CSR. Gradually, the program expanded between 2007 and 2008 to incorporate some 15000 associates. Later in 2010, Arcor launched the Sustainability Committee to strengthen commitment to CSR.
