Dawson Organizational Change; Processual Approach

According to Dawson (2012), organizational change is an ongoing dynamic process. Change occurs in both organizations operating in a dynamic business environment and a relatively stable environment. Change is unpredictable thus there is a need to adapt and accommodate the unexpected. His processual approach to change suggests that change should be studied as it happens. He puts into perception all perceptive of change to describe how organizations can adapt to it. The approach attempts to explain a process by which a particular rationale is maintained in organizational change. It involves the collection of longitudinal qualitative data. This is essential in facilitating a more detailed understanding of the complex and dynamic process of change as Benn et al., (2014) emphasizes.

It emphasizes on the fact that technology cannot be distinctly and separately identified as aspects of change without including political aspects. In chapter 7, the frequent breakdown of machines was not solely attributed to technical problems. The management sort to observe other aspects as employees operating the machines to identify the problem. Palmer et al., (2009) indicates that they finally found out that the night shift group had manipulated the machines to meet their needs. The theory attempts to examine how the change process emerges and interweave over time to understand the interlocking patterns. It also identifies how people make sense of their experiences of change and the influence of the place in which change is taking place. The approach identifies three factors that shape the process of change which include; internal and external context, politics within the organization and substance of change as Palmer et al., (2009) adds.

In providing a holistic view of change, the approach provides multilevel analysis such as external conditions, social-economic influence on internal group behavior and horizontal analysis of studying organization. This is done regarding the past, present and future. In chapter 7, the behavior of the night shift employees is affected by their group behavior. Any employee joining the team adapted to the way of doing things in the group. Changes in an operation of a machine were due to social factors thus concentrating on technical part alone could not provide a solution. This theory is opposed to the planned approach view for systematically studying individuals or behavior to understand change (Nasim & Sushil 2011).

Answer Question One

The management was justified in sacking off the night shift employees. This is because their behavior of manipulating the washing machine had an impact on overall operations of the organizations. The day shift employees also appreciated this change. It motivated them to work hard. This is because they appreciated their management and how they were swift to observe and understand the problem of frequent machine break down. This was an indicator of visionary leadership.
