Gender disparity in the workplace as a reflection of inequality in society


Gender disparity is a challenge in every society. The discussion on gender is a complex topic that encompasses various aspects of gender, sex, and gender roles. All of these aspects play an essential role in determining the various social challenges that are encountered by both men and women. Biological distinctions or differences make up sex of male or female while gender is behaviors learned that are associated with the sexes that make gender roles (Gregory 2003).

Gender roles encompass the behaviors and attitudes that are required for females and males in a given society or culture. These gender roles constitute or give the impact of gender inequality on the female and male sex. Gender roles are learned and taught by people surrounding a person while still young and also the culture and society that a person lives in and not given birth. A person’s family dictates a lot on how to view gender since it passes on the beliefs and values that are learned and taught to be embraced at a tender age. This paper seeks to discuss on gender disparity in the workplace as a reflection of inequality in society.

Gender discrimination in the workplace as a reflection of inequality in society

Today the discussion of gender disparity in the workplace environment has been labeled a major issue of concern. Typically, gender disparity in the work environment has been primarily attributed to unjust treatment towards a particular gender. The unjust treatment is perceived to be an imitation of the inequality portrayed in the society. Unfair treatment based on this correlation can be termed as gender discrimination. Both men and women have experienced acts of gender discrimination in the workplace depending on the platform or context where it is taking place. For instance in the work environment, women are always denied an opportunity may be because of pregnancy or on an opinion that women should not be promoted in the workplace as they fear that they may become pregnant. Similarly, harassment at the workplace is more common in women than in men. Moreover, there are cases where employees are denied holidays based on their sexual orientation. Sexual harassment is notably the leading form of gender inequality in the workplace environment. Offering promotions or bonuses and in return gain sexual favors or instances, where employees indulge in undesired advances or make off-color jokes, are all instances of harassment. Despite such acts being prohibited by the law, there are still instances of harassment.

On the same note, similar behaviors are also evidenced in society. In most societies, women are considered to be inferior and are not culturally allowed to hold leadership positions with the main argument being there role are in the kitchen. Moreover, in a normal cultural setting women are not allowed to give orders to men but they should rather be submissive and respect men. The same is replicated in the work environment where women are denied job promotions due to the perception that they should not lead and cannot deliver. Top job positions are left to men based on the ideology that women are a weaker sex. Despite the injustices in the work environment against women, there has been a significant drift from that perception in the recent past. The number of women in the workplace has substantially increased with some women employees being given top management roles (Gottfried & Reese 2004). Moreover, recent studies show that women are effective and efficient leaders than men in the corporate world. Gender inequality in the work environment has also been observed in the case of payment. Recent statistics shows that women are paid relatively lower compared to men on a job for instance in U.K women who work full time get 80% of what is paid to men and those that work part time earn 60% (Williams & Dellinger 2010).

When it comes to the society, women are always left at home and given the responsibility to take care of the elderly, for young children, the disabled and the sick. Therefore, the labor market for women becomes limited and, as a result, they are limited to getting formal employment. On the same note, men get the best training and education and are more likely to get job opportunities as compared to women who the society have reduced to caregivers and are only left to stay at home. Moreover, the few jobs that women get are poorly paying; this only leaves them to live to in dilapidated and poor conditions.

In conclusion, it is evident from the above discussion that workplace gender inequality is directly correlated to the inequality in the society. Despite acts of workplace discrimination affecting both men and women, it is more prevalent in women than it is men. Acts of gender inequality range from sexual harassment, pay discrimination and discrimination based sexual orientation. In society, women are perceived as a weaker sex and the same is replicated in the work environment and they are denied job opportunities and promotions. However, over the recent years there has been the enactment of various legislations protecting employees from the acts of discrimination based on gender, for instance, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that protects employees against any form of discrimination.
