BULLYING PROBLEM OR CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES WHICH THE CHINESE SUFFERED IN AUSTRALIA FROM THE AUSTRALIANS Essay Example
Australia is a multicultural country. This is due to the many people from different countries, ethnics and racial backgrounds settled in Australia (ABS 2006). They call themselves Australians and have Australia as their home. This makes Australia a home to people of diverse cultures. The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs indicates that over six million people have settled in Australia since 1945 as new settlers. Their arrival has caused a significant impact on every aspect of the society in Australian (Healey, 2005).
Sources for this research are several recent journal articles, monographs and Internet reports by law enforcement agencies and journalists. For the purposes of this research, the term «Chinese» refers to persons who are purely of Chinese ethnic origin living in Australia. This paper reports on a survey that was conducted face-to-face with small businesses in a community concentrated with ethnics. Withholding other factors, businesses owned by Chinese were at greater risk of being shoplifted while Vietnamese businesses had a greater risk of vandalism and burglary compared with English speaking businesses (Alvazzi Del Frate 2004; Taylor and Mayhew 2002). Only a fifth of recent incidents of crime were reported to the police with a large variation in reporting depending on the crime type
(Davis and Erez 1998; Torres & Vogel 2001). Though low proficiency in the English language was not directly associated with real victimization, it had a hand in a lower likelihood of reporting burglary and shoplifting. Reprisal as a fear also led to a reduction in the likelihood of reporting crimes since the offender could easily identify the victim. This paper contains some important findings that must resonate with those in charge of implementing the strategies of prevention of local crime in ethnically diverse communities.
