Biomechanical Principle

Application of the principle to the activity

The principle of force – this is the main principle of biomechanics since force causes movement.

-force is very important in long jump as it pushes the jumper forward, enabling movement.

-The principle of force in long jump is applied during take-off when the athlete jumps.

— this technique is beneficial in maximizing performance because it points out the areas that more force should be applied to achieve a longer jump.

The principle of linked segments – The human body is made up of segments that linked together at the joints.

-in long jump, different segments of the body move differently to cause movement and jumping. The muscles on the thighs pull the legs with their contraction and then push them with their relaxation to facilitate running and jumping.

-this principle in long jump can be applied in running and take-off.

-this is a beneficial principle as it allows for coordination of body segments to maximize performance.

The principle of the stretch-shorten cycle – optimal muscle force can be produced by stretching a muscle before shortening it.

-long jump is all about muscle movement; from the approach to jumping. To gain a more powerful thrust during the take-off, this principle should be applied – stretching before shortening.

-this principle can best be applied in long jump when taking off.

-it is a beneficiary principle in maximizing performance because when upheld it will see the jumper jumping higher and longer.

The principal of impulse direction – the change in momentum occurs in the opposite direction.

-impulse is applied in long jump to cause a change in momentum that enables the athlete to take off.

-this principle is mostly applied in the take-off phase where the athlete jumps after running for a while. The athlete pushes downwards to jump upwards.

-understanding this principle helps in maximizing performance in long jump by enabling the athlete to jump higher and go for a longer distance.
