The main aim of the research is to evaluate the spending patterns among young adults who have recently left their homes. The paper examines their motivations for spontaneous consumption decisions and their overall attitude towards debt accumulation. It is important to investigate consumption behaviour during this period because young adults are freed from the supervisory influence of their families while still not having the financial restrictions that come after beginning their careers. As such, the period plays a key role in determining consumption and debt preferences at later stages of life. The exploratory research was conducted at the University of Canterbury which is one of New Zealand’s foremost universities. The participants in the study were 18-25-year-olds who were at the first and second years of study. Importantly, a rigorous random sampling and screening approach was chosen to arrive at a total of ten participants who would take part in two focus group discussions and depth interviews. The above selection criteria focused on factors like gender, age, housing, and the degree enrolled to ensure that the findings could apply to the general young adult population. As stated, the activities included a focus group discussion that allowed the researchers to identify individuals who would describe their attitudes and behaviours in a way that would add value to the research.

The main finding was that young adults have a laid back attitude towards debt and spontaneous consumption. The participants valued self-reward and instant satisfaction regardless of the consequences. These trends are different from those witnessed in past generations where young adults had less impulsive consumption and preferred to plan their consumption, save for the future, and avoid debt. The paper has an important implication for marketers. The spontaneous nature of the young generation under study coupled with the casual attitude towards debt means that there is an opportunity for more sales owing to a strengthening “culture of consumption”.
