Article Review

Weingart S N, Wilson R M, Gibberd R W & Harrison B 2000 “Epidemiology of medical error,” BMJ: British Medical Journal, 320(7237): p. 774.

The main thesis of the reference

The purpose or the article is to provide a better understanding of the prevalence of medical errors in health care environment and the degree of harm to patients.
Any predictions or applicability to future states or about what might happen next

This article is highly applicable to the current situation in health care settings and will still be useful to future states. If clinicians and policy makers follow what has been discussed in the article concerning medical errors chances of risks reducing are high.
Accuracy, applicability, reliability, validity and generalizability of the reading

After reading the article I identified accuracy in how the information about medical errors is reported as figures are provided based on benchmark studies. The article is in deed applicable to the current situations in health care as medical errors are still evident. This implies that research findings are reliable and valid for use by health professionals. The information in the article is generally applicable to all health care institutions found not only in Australia, but also in other countries.

Issues in the reading that I agree with

I strongly agree with the fact that patients who suffer from medical error have prolonged stay in hospitals which increases hospitalization costs.I also concur with the authors that medical mistakes occur most when clinicians are less experienced and during the application of new techniques.

Issues in the reading that I disagree with

To some extent I disagree that it is not very important to consider the characteristics of individual patients to explain injury. The effects of medical errors may be determined by analysing the appearance of patients and not just the period they stay in hospital.
Why the material read is useful

All in all, the article is very important to clinicians, patients and policy makers. The articles has addressed the issue of medical error comprehensively including causes, types, consequences, clinicians responsible and possible risk factors. The information can be used as a guide in policy formation and implementation, and decision making in health institutions concerning medical errors.

Ergas H 2012 “Funding and providing aged care: lessons from the last decade,” Australian Economic Review, 45(3): pp.362-367.

The main thesis of the reference

The article talks about funding of aged care with focus on how the costs may be reduced in future given the prediction that aged-care costs are likely to increase.
Any predictions or applicability to future states or about what might happen next

The prediction in the article is that age-care costs will increase in future with continued use of co-payments system. The reading is applicable to health payment system in Australia and if the recommendations provided could be considered, the insurance coverage system of payment may beintroduced in aged care.
Accuracy, applicability, reliability, validity and generalizability

The level of accuracy in the article is above average and the article is applicable to the health industry and economy of Australia as a whole. The information in the article is reliable and valid since the authors used the right materials develop their thought about the issue. The reading is specifically concerned with funding for aged care and does not talk about other groups of people such as children and adults.
Issues in the reading that I agree with

It is true that the government aged-care system should be efficient and make good use of community resources more equitably and most importantly provide care to individuals who need it. I also agree that aged care cost is likely to increase in future due to the growing percentage of people aged between 80 and 100 years.

Issues in the reading that I disagree with

I don’t agree that aged care should be considered as an insurable incident even if it has the technical attributes associated with insurability.

Why the material read is useful

The information in the article is useful because it helps the reader to understand the concept of aged care funding and especially how the cost is likely to increase further. Thus, it can be used in making decisions related to aged-care funding. How this article relates to Funding Aged Care in Australia

Australia is a high-longevity country implying that the cost of funding aged care is likely to increase. As indicated in the article, increase in life expectancy increases the number of old people and this has budgetary consequences as funding aged care concerns.
