Homeschooling is the education that occurs at home. The learning is alternative to the public approach in which the children meet at school provides the educational requirements. The homeschooling approach relies on the parents providing the tutoring or determining the learning process. The factors contributing to homeschooling include more quality family time, religious education, address children special needs requirements, protect the children from problems at school such as bullying and to provide nontraditional education (Van and Cecilia 182). Even though there are numerous reasons for homeschooling, there are many problems and issues associated with such a form of learning. For example, exposure to other people in the community or society may be negated through homeschooling. Some people may view homeschooling is fun and cool, but the numerous problems or consequences may negate the identified benefits. Thus, the aim of the essay is students who are home schooled experience less socialization with other students their age, and homeschooling does not prepare the students for the real world like how the public school does.

Literature Review

Cooper and John (111) points out most of the homeschooling children are families from the Evangelical Christians religion and estimates there are around 1.35 million children whom are homeschooled. Lacireno-Paquet and Charleen (pr. 1) provide similar estimates of between 1.5 and 2 million children who are homeschooled. The authors continue to state that the religious values, family moral, and the academic expectations are the driving forces, which makes homeschooling favorable. Sawal (66) presents numerous reasons why parents tend to choose homeschooling to public school including the public school environment due to unfavorable peer pressure, drugs and safety, perceived ineffectiveness of schools and dissatisfaction with curriculum content.

Successful Homeschooling presents numerous social disadvantages associated with homeschooling. The children homeschooling are faced with challenges when they further education, the children are unable to access other adults apart from the family members, homeschooling does not provide children with avenues for cooperation and interaction, the children will not be able to form childhood friendships, and the children will face challenges with cultural diversity because of lack of exposure (Kılıç and Özgür 115). In addition, the growth of a child requires exposure to different conditions and situations such as prep and other social activities that children engage.

Rational (Research Questions)

The following are the research questions:

  1. What are the reasons for homeschooling?

  2. What are some of the problems of homeschooling?

  3. Are there socialization issues associated with homeschooling?


Quantitative research will be done to collect the information and views from the respondents. The instrument used for collecting the information will have different questions targeting different audiences. The questionnaires will be presented to the teachers, students and parents. The aim is to receive conclusive information from each of the stakeholders and may better inform on the challenges of homeschooling especially on social perspective.

Expected results

The expected results include understanding the reasons for homeschool preference and motivating factors. The influence of homeschooling on socialization will also be understood and provides avenues of analyzing the wider impact of homeschooling. Therefore, different types of results are expected from the current study.


Collecting and analyzing information on homeschooling is important since it assists in making policy changes and other educational related changes. The aim of any government and institution is to provide high quality education and understanding the contribution and shortcomings of homeschooling can guide the policy makers and even the parents.
