Reflective questions
An elevator speech is an oral communication that is aimed at engaging the audience. It is also meant to persuade them (Sjodin, 2012). Normally it takes about one hundred words or less than 30 seconds to persuade the audience. Collect word selection makes the speech unique from that of other people. When creating an elevator speech, it does not necessarily have to be official or formal (Pincus, 2007). This speech is meant to pass an advertisement message within the shortest time possible. It would be advantageous to understand the target audience though it is nonspecific to listeners.
Strengths and weaknesses of using an elevator
Strengths of elevator speech
There is a great possibility of creating a positive networking during casual networking. In the daily activities, people interact in different platforms. However, there could be limited time for self-expression to potential employers, for example, e.g. in the airstrip, and in busy restaurants. In such a situation using elevator speech would persuade potential employers to listen and gain interest in your areas of specialization. Sometimes, an individual could be willing to pass some information through a phone call. In case the person cannot be reached, it is easy to leave a voice mail in form of elevator speech.
Weaknesses
Relevant information could be omitted. This could, for example, deny an individual a chance to express himself/herself to the potential employers.
Some employers may end up being discouraged after realizing that the information provided by the elevator speech does match the employees’ job performance.
As a manager, preferring theory Y would be a recommendable style of management. This is because workers are always ambitious. Employees are passionate in their work and they love what they do. The workers are self-motivated and they need minimum supervision. Career selection is based on individual choice on the area of specialization and passion. Individuals working in the same field will be motivated in job participation. This will be via ideological support, and consultation (Pawar, 2014). The manager will have little time to make a lot of follow ups on attendance, absenteeism and time wastage since the workers are trusted in their work. The manager will, however, motivate the workers according to their level of performance. This will ensure that the best workers are motivated to work even harder posing a challenge to the less productive workers. As a result, workers will work hard for promotion and for them to exploit their full potentials.
Since workers aim at defining themselves with their professions, they will always work hard competing with the rival organizations so that they can be ranked the best. It is therefore important to allow the workers do what they love. This will ensure that they are highly productive in their areas of specialization and that minimum supervision will be required. In the case of strict management and maximum supervision, the workers are likely to be less productive either due to stress, fatigue or conflicts within the organization. They may also lack self-motivation, and since they are not passionate about their job, they end up being less productive.
The following are the most preferable, strategies of solving conflict within an organization; managing of your emotions. When you are sad you are likely to make the wrong conclusion. In case a conflict arises in the workplace it is important to wait until the time one is sober and react to the source of the conflict (Goetsch, & Davis, 2014). Making judgment while one is under higher emotions is likely to worsen the situation or even causing big losses. It is also important to understand that emotion is contagious, and fear of the unknown is likely to occur within the organization making people react negatively.
The other effective strategy is face-detracting and face-saving, it is important to be considerate while making a remark concerning the business progress. It is important to consider the integrity, respect, and credibility of each worker. Therefore the use of face detracting method would not be effective since it would lead either to defensive listening or even inhibit both communication and listening. This will deny a room for collaboration. It is therefore important to apply face-saving strategy which will ensure that credibility of the workers, their respect is valued. This will give a room for collaboration hence solving the conflict freely. These strategies are effective in solving conflict within an organization (Wolff, & Yakinthou, 2013).
Avoidance strategy would not be very effective since it only postpones the challenge. In your absentia, the situation is contained but upon your return, the conflict is likely to reoccur. This may lead to worker living in grudges within the workplace. Collaboration may not be realistic in such a condition. The company’s performance will also be poor due to lack of consultation.
Viewing nonverbal communication as that which is not verbal communication will enhance our understanding of communication. Nonverbal communication entails passing a message from one person to the other without using words. It involves the use of gestures, facial expressions, postures, timing and also tone. This is an implication that there are different aspects of communication apart from using words. However, it is not easy to understand the nonverbal communication. This is because, unlike the verbal communication, nonverbal communication involves the whole body, the space the body occupies, it also involves the time it interacts (Knapp, Hall, & Horgan, 2013).
Nonverbal communication is irreversible, similarly, in verbal communication once a statement has been made it cannot be restated. However, through verbal communication one can be in a position to elaborate what an individual meant. It is possible for one to misinterpret the message intended; this is because the message could be either intentional or unintentional. This may bring about contradiction, it could also replace the information delivered or even mask.
It is possible to express one’s feeling and attitude through nonverbal communication; this is the same way that an individual can express their altitude through intonations. The two verbal and nonverbal communications are useful in creating a rapport and a strong relationship with the audience. Therefore, nonverbal communication does not limit the understanding of communication since an individual is able to pass information from one person to the other, just like using verbal communication.
