RAM stands for the Random Access Memory. RAM, as used in the information and technology docket, is the key store or memory of the technological device that involves computers and telephones among others. The report is discussing what RAM is and how it is used. Its application merits, and demerits too will be highlighted in details in the report. The merits and demerits have been highlighted basing the comparison to the already existing technologies. There have been several advances to the RAM since it was found to improve the performance of its use in the technological devices (Rueceks, 2016, pp. 97). It has been majorly used as the memory to the Computer and telephones for data storage. As these technological sector is advancing each day, the RAM has been categorized among the available forms of the integrated circuits. It is a volatile memory type that includes the use of a DRAM module of memory. Also, a highlight will be made in the report on how the RAM works. The characteristics of the RAM also have been addressed in the report (Raoux, 2016, pp. 469).

What a RAM is?

RAM is a data storage form that is found in computers, it is known for data storage that occurs through receiving commands from different programs in the specific technological devices. The RAM used in the current technology is different from the original RAM when it was first introduced. The advancements have been made in the capacity the RAM can hold to store data in these devices. An example is that the space available in the olden telephones, NOR-flash (flash memory) and other types of ROM’s available in computers was minimal as compared to the current devices. On the working of the RAM, it works as a data storage in the device. Therefore, the RAM is the main data storage device in the technological devices. The RAMs available in the market have de-multiplexing and multiplexing circuit that helps in connection of data lines in the process of addressing reading and writing storage in the entry. The RAM saves multiple data using the same command address.

Functioning of the RAM

On its’ functioning, there has to be a command given to it for data storage to happen. Therefore, the data stored in the RAM can be read as well as edited through writing and deleting. The RAM works in contrast to the other available data storage devices that include the Hard Disks and the DVD-RWs among others. The contrast is brought about by the time taken for data to display and be read or edited (Rueceks, 2016, pp. 94). The RAM takes minimal time possible to display data as well as allowing writing on the already saved data. The deviation in time is brought about by the difference in rotation time taken by the media as well as the arm movement of each particular storage device. The RAM in the telephones and the computers are put by the creators of the device varying them with the space required for the device. The RAM saves data automatically when an auto-saving command has been given to the device. Therefore, is no command has been given to the device to save data automatically; the data entered in them is lost upon loss of power. The usage of the RAM is based on the user. On the telephones and computers, a procedure has to be followed for data to be saved and stored (Rueceks, 2016, pp. 95).

Advantages of the RAM as compared to the existing technologies.

The advantages of having the RAM as the storage device are that data is easily recovered in the RAM despite the sequence that has been followed to save the data. Therefore, no matter what the saving method has been used as a command to the system, the data will always be retrieved for not a limited time. The RAM also allows editing of data that was saved in it as well as retrieving data. Therefore, it is the most convenient saving method that can be used by all personal users and institutions to save important data. Besides, the RAM is user defined. The user determines for how long a particular data is supposed to be kept in the device as well as what is not to be stored in the device. Therefore, the user can erase data from the device as well as make adjustments to the data stored in the RAM whereby much data can be added or erased from the RAM. The RAM is the fastest method of data storage and retrieving as well (Chen, 2015, pp. 1877).

Besides, the RAM consumes less power to work. Therefore, it is less costly to the users as compared to the other storage devices available in the market. Also, the RAM works silently in the devices that have it. This is as a result of lack of moving parts in the RAM. As the changes are being made on the technological devices, the RAM also is advancing too to accommodate the mass data that needs to be stored. Therefore, the RAM has advanced to hold mass data currently and the advancement is expected to keep developing in the near future. This is to enable it to keep at par with the technology in the RAM usage and functionality.

Disadvantages of the RAM

Upon data loss, the RAM loses data if not saved before the power loss. The data loss greatly disadvantages the user to the RAM. The disadvantage is based on the volatility of the RAM whereby data is lost when the computer shuts down or goes off is there is no battery in the device to hold the device on. Also, the device is not friendly to the user. It is due to the installation cost that is high since they are less available in the market. The original and best RAM’s are not easily available in the market since there are fewer customers who can afford it (Raoux, 2016, pp. 476). Therefore, the RAM is of disadvantage to the user in places where power is not readily available in the area as well as the volatility of the RAM.

In conclusion, the RAM is the main memory to the technological devices that have fewer demerits in comparison to the merits. Therefore, the RAM is effective in areas where the user’s device has access to the continuous power supply or having access to charging places when power is low. The RAM is used for data storage which allows the user to easily retrieve data as well as edit it at any time. The editing includes addition as well as deleting of writings in the data. Also, data is always saved despite the method used to save it to the device. On the usage of the device, the user enters commands to the system for the RAM to respond. It is through the response the RAM takes that data is saved for future use and reference. All devices that have RAM as the data storage device uses power for them to function thus that making them volatile. As a result, only a few users can afford the RAM. Besides, the advances that have been made on the RAM currently allow it to carry more data as compared to the RAM’s that existed in ancient years. Therefore, as the technology keeps changing, so is the RAM advancing too to offer better services to the user? Also, the RAM uses less power to work efficiently thus being convenient to the users.
