Climate Change

The atmosphere has warmed, the sea levels have risen and polar ice has melted. Carbon dioxide gas emission has increased which has been attributed to economic and population growth. The effects of carbon dioxide have been detected in the climate system which has been a huge cause of global warming (Warrick and Mooney, 2014). Climate change has brought about significant effects on natural and human system across the world. Climate change has been observed for many years now and is characterised by decrease in cold temperature, increase in incidence of heavy precipitation and increase in the sea levels. In order to prevent further damage to the environment and the human species, there are several efforts that have been made to prevent further climate change and global warming (The World Bank, 2015). This essay will describe what climate, climate change and climate systems are. It will also describe the efforts that have been done to address the issue.

Climate can be described as the weather condition of a place over a long period of time. Whether condition changes constantly but climate takes hundreds or even thousands of years to change. The planet is faced with a future characterized by extreme weather changes, melting of polar ice as well as rising of sea levels due to the emission of dangerous gases like carbon dioxide (Warrick and Mooney, 2014). Scientists report that continued emission of these gases will intensify the warming of all elements of the climate system. This will lead to severe and irreversible impacts for the environment, ecosystem and people in general. Climate change is referred to the interactive system that entails elements such as hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, the sun and the land surface (The World Bank, 2015). In order to prevent this, there is need for a sustained reduction in the emission of these gases which can reduce climate change risks.

Climate change involves a long-term change of weather conditions that has affected the biosphere and the population in general. There is an assumption that is reported that threats of climate change can be minimized as choices can be made to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases which will reverse the harm within few decades (Dentener and Raes, 2002). Climate change is considered a global problem that does not respect the national borders. Greenhouse emission affect people everywhere and it is a condition that necessitates solutions that should be coordinated internationally in order for countries to move towards low-carbon economy. The global community has come together to find ways that can assist in minimizing the amount of climate change (Bachmann, John and Seidel, 2013). There are a number of meetings that has taken place that has involved both the developed and the developing countries in minimizing and addressing climate change. Some major meetings include Copenhagen, Pans, Rio and Kyoto. Different states have come together to assist in the mitigation and adoption of climate change, education for sustainable development and assessment of risks brought about by climate change (Bachmann, John and Seidel, 2013).

To address climate change, states have adopted the Paris Agreement. International coordination to address climate change has been seen through the Paris Climate Conference known as COP21. COP21 involved 195 countries both developed and developing (The World Bank, 2015). Together, the member states made a decision to limit the temperature increase to about 1.5 degrees. In addition, they made a decision to extend the goal of mobilizing $100 billion annually to support climate change efforts and assist developing countries in achieving their climate change goals. The COP21 agreement is under international law that is legally binding (The World Bank, 2015). Most of the decisions made will not take place until at least 2020. All the decisions made in the COP21 were focussed on providing funding and clean technologies that will assist reduce global climate change (The World Bank, 2015).

In conclusion, the world is undergoing global climate change as a result of carbon dioxide gas emission which has increased due to economic and population growth. Climate change has brought about significant effects on natural and human system across the world. It is reported that continued emission of greenhouse gases will intensify climate change and will lead to severe and irreversible impacts for the environment, ecosystem and people in general. Climate change does not respect the national borders as it affects people everywhere. This has necessitated the need for international coordination. The global community has joined forces to address the issue of climate change. To address global climate change, COP21 was adopted. It aimed at limiting temperature increase to 1.5 degrees and enforces funding for developing countries.
