A Psychological Perspective

As children start to learn about the physical and social world around them before they undergo formal education, television, among other things, is their immediate tool for the learning. Consequently, though under investigated, the viewing of television has far-reaching social implication on children’s injuries and safety behaviors. From the safety rule’s study, seventy-five percent of children and sixty-two percent of parents blamed the absence of safety rules for about hundred cases of real injuries discussed. This demands that the parents should come in place and tell the children how to be careful in different settings, which can predispose them to danger (Guerin & Guerin 2009, p.32).

One of the leading causes of death among the adolescents and children who are one year old and above are unintentional injury. Though the psychological mechanisms pertaining to the unintentional injury are poorly understood, pediatric psychology has defined guides that can bring an understanding on the causes and prevention of the injuries. One such guide is the victim’s antecedent states, for instance the emotional state and the environmental influence, for instance darkness, victim’s specific characteristics, for instance personality and developmental level (Pott et al. 1994, p.518).


For the clinicians, there is higher susceptibility of children from poor families to injuries than those from rich families. Besides, the children from the poor families spend more hours watching television than those from rich backgrounds. Because of the implications of such things as television viewing on children safety behaviors and injuries, parents are advised to take full responsibility in issuing safety rules and discussion that guide their children in through their delicate stage in their lifespan (Pott et al. 1994, p.518).
