CHEMISTRY, THE ENABLING SCIENCE

Chemistry is a fundamental science that has a great influence in the world we live in today, and in future. Other scientific fields – engineering, physics, biomedical science, environmental science, forensics, chemical biology etc., are essentially tied to chemistry. It is a central science that seeks to provide ideas and solutions to countless fundamental questions. Almost all important discoveries and new technological challenges are based on chemistry concepts — from space rockets to the Renaissance, from mapping DNA to microchip technology. People heavily rely on a wide range of chemical products; synthetic fabrics, cleaning agents, pesticides, adhesives, plastics, vitamins, explosives, fireworks and many more. Without science, a vital component in space rocket fuel, the liquid oxygen, would not be existing (Baird, et al., 2011). This means that space exploration and other related technologies, such as the satellite TV and internet would not be in existence. Human beings would still be suffering from illnesses, such as polio, smallpox and bacterial infections that are currently being treated using penicillin. Chemistry offers limitless avenues and challenges at cutting-edge areas, including medicine, healthcare, chemical biology, manufacturing, cleaning and cooking, and environmental processes.

Drug innovation is one major focus of scientific research in the world. Chemical biology equally plays a crucial role. It involves design, chemical synthesis, and studies to modulate chemical processes, such as those that are related to various diseases, using bio-mimetic and bio-active compounds (Lissauer & Pater, 2013). Examples of these compounds include bio-probes and bio-sensors, drug delivery vehicles, drugs, vaccines, biomedical materials, contrast agents etc. By integrating principles of biology and chemistry, chemical biology provides new molecular approaches for novel bio-inspired materials, applications and development of devices, for example, nanomedicine. The molecular approaches required rely on input from synthetic chemistry, particularly organic synthesis. Development of synthetic strategies is essential in obtaining new drug strategies, new molecules and molecular building blocks.

Innovations made in chemistry are very essential in keeping human beings healthier and living longer. The future still holds new major breakthroughs, for instance, plastic blood that has the ability to mimic hemoglobin, nanotechnologies aimed to deliver chemotherapy and drugs based on an individual’s DNA, artificial skin capable of sensing temperature and touch, and many more innovations made possible by the discipline (Breslow, 1997).

Food production has been boosted to meet the world’s food demand by manufacturing fertilizers and chemicals that provide essential nutrients required by plants. Chemical compounds that can eradicate plant pests and diseases have also been invented. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 6,000 people die every day due to dirty water. Chlorine chemistry provides a reliable solution against waterborne micro-organisms, and safe disinfected water can be delivered (Restivo, 2005). All these rely on chemistry. Cleaning agents for laundry, dishes, homes and human body are all attributed to chemistry. Chemistry principles are applied in production and use of soaps, bleaches and disinfectants.

In conclusion, chemistry is the central fundamental science that involves matter and tries to explain many things around human life. Applications of chemistry have significantly advanced human civilization. Innovative chemical molecules, synthetic fibers, plastics etc. are being used in almost all aspects of life, from consumer to chemical industrial products.
