Physical activity is crucial especially for the young people in our generation. Unfortunately, more children than adults are falling victims of overweight, which is because of an inactive lifestyle. This program plan aims to address some of the sedentary behaviours in the young people. These include spending hours sitting behind screens. Additionally, the young people presently are involving themselves much in activities such as video games, which are slowly killing their active behaviours. The plan also aims to address some of the ways in which children can engage themselves in useful physical activities. The target group for this project is children aged between 5-10 years. The project will place more emphasis on physical activity in this age group in the home set up.


The objective of this project is to increase physical activity amongst children between 5-10 years in a home set up.


This will be done by introducing a workable physical activity schedule that targets both the children and their parents in a family environment set up.

Targeted group and behaviour

Children who are between 5-10 years are very active. This is the time when most of them are on self-discovery, determining what they are able to do best. For instance, some of them start to engage in different activities such as soccer, they learn to run in a stable way, and some of them already discover what they like doing. However, this age is also good at learning and many of them are acquainted with programs on the televisions. If a parent is not careful, enough, at this age, a child may develop the habit of sitting behind the screen for hours or playing video games. Physical activity at this age is a very beneficial behaviour. Firstly, children who engage in physical activities develop stronger muscles and are able to control their body fats. Such activities lower their blood pressure as well as their cholesterol levels in their blood. Physical activity as a behaviour ensures that children are not at a risk of developing diabetes and overweight.

In Australia, there are very low levels of physical activity and this is one of the major causes of child mortality. Many children fall victims of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 Diabetes and cancer.

  • Self-efficacy: This is the ability of a child to complete a task.

  • Self-perception: This is the belief of a child about a physical activity.

  • Enjoyment: The ability of a child to enjoy physical activity as part of his or her daily routine.

  • Perceived barriers: These include poor access to facilities.

  • Parent support: Lack of parental support discourages children from involving in physical activities.

In this project, I will tackle two main correlates: self-efficacy and parental support. Self-efficacy is the sense of confidence in an individual towards physical activity skills. According to statistics, self-efficacy among the boy child is higher than the one experienced in the girl child. I will carry out an investigation of self-efficacy among families that have children who are between 5-10 years. These families should be the ones that take physical activity as part of their daily routine. I will also observe the participation of parents and its effects on children during physical activity within the family set up.
