Handwriting is quite an important tool for both adults and children. For children it is the basic tool for their learning while to the adult it is the best tool for evaluating them before incorporation into various fields. Similarly typing is as vital as handwriting. Typing is one of the milestones that take education into a higher notch as far as technology is concerned. This paper seeks to address the two issues and finally concludes that typing should be embraced in examinations rather than using the handwritten work. (Peverly, 2006)

Handwriting based examinations promotes proper understanding of the writer. When a person writes his or her own work in their own words an in their own handwriting psychologists believe that it is possible to understand that particular person’s way of thinking and the manner in which he is able to approach a question. This is because person’s handwritten work speaks more about the carefulness and the concentration that the writer places on his work (Peverly, 2006). On the other hand, a writer who types his work just presents the work edited according to the smartness portrayed by the computer or the machine that he uses in typing. Moreover, it is not possible to tell whether the writer was careful or not when writing the assignment. This therefore concludes that it is better to present examinations in the handwritten format rather than the typed format so as to promote carefulness among the students

Handwritten work enhances clear thoughts and natural structure of the one presenting it. The much effort placed on young children as they learn how to read and write can only be best shown through letting the student present their work in handwritten format. The tutor is able to know the progress of the student by checking his/her work. For example it has been noted that when the writer is so close to the page it implies that the translation of the thought has little chances to deviation from the main topic. While typing one is not able to base the structure of writing on his own personal format rather he concentrates on what the computer offers. Editing of typed work is also based on the expertise of using the machine. Computers offers more complex ways of presenting the work than what one would present if he did it using the handwritten format.

However, it should be noted that typing makes work easier, saves in time and promotes efficiency. With modern technology what really matters most is the speed and the efficiency of doing things. Typing enables the writer to present the work as fast as possible and also helps in making corrections as quick as possible. This is because a computer is able to detect the mistakes that the writer makes while typing and notify him/her for correction. It is easier to edit typed work rather than the written one. Proof-reading of typed work as compared to the written one is more efficient and results to excellent outcomes. For this reason it is better to present examinations in typed format rather than the handwritten one. (Medwell & Wray, 2007)

Typing also promotes eligibility and thus fairness in awarding marks to the students. Sometimes it is difficult for a student to learn the art or the skill of writing in a good and quite legible handwriting. This is a disadvantage to the student because could be he or she has the correct point but due to illegibility of his handwritten work he ends up failing the exam. But when all students present their work in typed format no one can be a victim of bias based on his/her handwriting. Therefore typing enhances uniformity as well as fairness.

In addition typing or presenting work using the modern technology helps reduce the cases of losing work due mishandling of the paper work. If a student submits his or her work via the email, it is not possible for the teacher to misplace his/her work as compared to handwritten one. It is also possible to submit the typed work anytime and anywhere since the student will just require having their lecturer’s email address and submission of the assignment can be done easily. This therefore enhances flexibility in academics as well as promotes effectiveness in learning. (William & Mackenzie, 1995)

The only major problem or disadvantage of using the typed format when presenting ones work is plagiarism and difficulties in knowing whether the work was done by the person being tested or by someone else. However these problems have currently been counteracted by the development of software that can detect plagiarism. On the other hand the disadvantages of using handwritten format are numerous and outweigh those of using typed format in presenting ones work. For instance they include, illegibility of the work, time consuming, possibility of the work being misplaced and bias of the person marking the work among others. . (Medwell & Wray, 2007)

Therefore it can be concluded that typed format of presenting examinations is more preferable to typed format. This is because, as discussed in this paper, typing has more advantages than handwritten work. Moreover depending on the changing academic environment, it is worthy to embrace the technologized way of doing things so as to give room for transformations.

  • The problems of misplaced assignments can be avoided by embracing the typing format of presenting exam work.

  • Typed work can be presented at anytime and anywhere; this makes it flexible for both the lecturer and the student to work at the time of their choice just limiting them to the set deadlines.

  • More clarifications can be made when the work is being done via emails.
